Remember that older PowerPoint template files, ppt files, do not have SmartArt objects embedded. To add text effects: Select the text you want to apply the effect to or select the text box to apply the effect to all text within the text box. Go to the “Format” tab, and choose the built-in WordArt style you want to apply. You can create you custom WordArt by using changing settings for “Text Fill”, “Text Outline”, and “Text Effects”.

A slide master is the top slide in a hierarchy of slides that stores information about the theme and slide layouts of a presentation, including the background, color, fonts, effects, placeholder sizes, and positioning.
